Keith and Emily Wilson were tired of sleeping in a bedroom that felt like a throwback to their dorm days. “We wanted something that was sort of serene but still kid-friendly， because we have a three-and-a-half-year-old and a five-month-old，” says Keith， our go-to builder for special projects here in the Fresh American office and in our showrooms. “We wanted something for us to escape to.” So they turned to Annie and her creative team for an easy makeover that made a world of difference with just a little paint， some new rugs，？a swoon-worthy bed， and some soft， luxurious new bedding.funny pillow cases
While Keith and Emily were game for any type of change， Annie’s team knew that the richly grained wood moldings， trimaccent pillow case baby decorative， and floors—original to the circa-1920s house—were keepers. So they turned their focus to warming up the white walls with Benjamin Moore’s San Antonio Gray？ (a soft， midtone neutral)， and painting over the semigloss ceiling with an ultraflat white， which helps lighten the room and give the illusion of extra height. To bring a bit of texture and coziness to the bedroom， they added a pair of 3’-by-5’ wool rugs in a modern grid pattern—a plush， welcoming feel underfoot， on either side of the bed， especially first thing on a chilly morning.
Now let’s talk about that platform bed. Keith made this beauty—complete with tons of under-bed storage drawers—by hand， and painted it the same color as the walls. “It’s great，” he says， “because we have plenty of room for storage. We no longer have DVDs as décor.” And that gorgeous headboard？ Also built by hand， from a piece of curly red oak， by Keith. (If you’re hoping Emily and Keith will tire of the bed soon so you can snag it， get in line. The whole office is coveting it!)
Annie loved the vintage cedar chest， an heirloom from Emily’s grandmother， so much that she chose not to refinish it. Instead， she added a piece of artwork that’s a favorite of Keith’s and some of Emily’s weaving shuttles—a nod to her work with her parents’ hand-weaving business， Mostrom &； Chase Handweavers， where they craft all sorts of gorgeous scarves，？shawls， tableware， and blankets—as decorative touches on top. And she didn’t forget about the family dog (and occasional Dash &； Albert rug model)， Sully， who got his own new dog bed to jazz up his corner of the room.
Because the bedroom has only two sconces in one corner of the room， bringing in more light is a challenge. So Annie and her team hung a strand of Christmas lights behind the bed， then draped a pair of gauzy white window panels over it for a soft， diffused glow.
When it came time to choose the bedding， Annie went with layered neutrals： white Tencel sheets， a slate matelassé coverlet and shams， and a cotton duvet and trio of Euro shams against the headboard in a cool， Indian-inspired pattern. She added a snuggly fleece throw for extra warmth without the weight， and a linen pillow with hand-knotted applique for visual interest. Annie also refreshed all of their pillows and the duvet insert with hypoallergenic down-alternative versions. All but the decorative pillow are machine-washable， so Emily and Keith can sleep， lounge， read， or watch Saturday-morning cartoons with the kids， then toss everything in the wash on laundry day.
Keith admits that light colors on the bedding initially made him nervous， because having two kids and a dog in the house makes it that much harder to keep everything clean. But once everything was put together， he couldn’t have been happier. “I’ve been sleeping a lot better，” he reports. “The room feels more complete—it’s not a mishmash of items and styles anymore. It feels like an adult bed in an adult room.”
